Are there different types of gynecologic surgery?

Colposcopy

If you have an abnormal Pap test, your doctor might recommend a colposcopy. This procedure involves your Associated Surgical Center provider examining your cervix, vagina, and vulva with a tool called a colposcope. If your surgeon discovers any abnormal cells, they can take a biopsy with the colposcope and send it to a laboratory for further testing.

Dilation and curettage

If the team suspects you have uterine cancer or uterine polyps, they might recommend dilation and curettage. This procedure involves your Associated Surgical Center provider using a surgical tool called a sharp curette to carefully remove your uterine lining. You might also benefit from dilation and curettage if you have uterine fibroids.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a nonsurgical treatment used to diagnose and treat common uterine problems. Your Associated Surgical Center provider might recommend a hysteroscopy to locate an intrauterine device (IUD), determine the cause of repeated miscarriages, or remove an adhesion. 

LEEP procedure

If a Pap smear indicates the presence of cancerous or abnormal cells on your cervix, your surgeon might recommend a LEEP procedure. LEEP stands for loop electrical excision procedure. During this type of surgery, your provider uses an electrically charged piece of wire to carefully cut away abnormal tissue.
